ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's agent for longer, more involved tasks. It can research, analyze information, work across connected apps and files, and create finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites.
This is a major change from ordinary chat: instead of answering one turn at a time, Work can keep a task moving, ask questions, show progress, and request approval for important actions.
ChatGPT Work was introduced on July 9, 2026. It is new and likely to change quickly. Confirm availability, plan access, and current behavior in the ChatGPT release notes.

Use Work when the deliverable—not the conversation—is the point.
Give it a work order
A good Work prompt resembles a project brief.
Include:
- Objective and audience.
- Deliverables and file formats.
- Approved sources and connected apps.
- Required calculations or analysis.
- Style, template, and accessibility requirements.
- Milestones where it should ask for review.
- Actions it must never take without approval.
- Deadline or schedule if relevant.
Example:
Create a board-ready quarterly performance pack from the approved folder. Deliver an editable spreadsheet with source tabs, a ten-slide presentation using our template, and a two-page written summary. Reconcile every total to the source files. Stop after the outline and data-validation report for approval before creating the final files.

Long tasks amplify early mistakes. Build approval points into the job.

Do not wait until a polished final file to discover that the wrong quarter was analyzed.
Finished does not mean verified
Open every artifact. Inspect spreadsheet formulas, slide claims, document citations, and links. Check whether a generated Site works on mobile and meets accessibility needs.
Ask Work to produce a QA report containing:
- Source inventory.
- Assumptions.
- Reconciliation checks.
- Unresolved questions.
- Known limitations.
- Actions taken.
- Files created and their purpose.
Save the report with the deliverables.
Connected apps increase both value and risk
Work can become much more useful when it can reach authorized email, storage, calendars, or workplace tools. It can also expose more data and encounter malicious instructions inside those sources.
Use least privilege. Connect only the needed account or folder. Prefer read-only access. Require confirmation before sending, deleting, publishing, purchasing, or changing a record.
For company use, administrators should define approved apps, retention, logs, and escalation.
Scheduled work
Work can support Scheduled Tasks that run once, repeat, trigger, or monitor for changes. A recurring workflow should state the source, frequency, materiality threshold, and behavior when nothing changed.
Do not assume unattended work is reliable because the first run succeeded. Review recurring output and stop tasks that drift.
Cost and plan reality
Long tasks can consume more of a plan's allowance or usage-based credits than a normal chat. Complex deliverables may take substantial time.

When this is the wrong tool
ChatGPT Work is the wrong tool for unsupervised payroll, legal filing, clinical decisions, financial execution, production deployment, or any workflow requiring deterministic approval and complete auditability.
It is also excessive for a simple answer or rewrite. Use the smallest tool that completes the job.
Work is most valuable when a person defines the brief, approves the plan, and verifies the artifact.
