When not to use ChatGPT
Hallucinations, context drift, stale facts, high-stakes boundaries, and safer alternatives.

ChatGPT is useful because it produces plausible language quickly. That is also the core risk: a wrong answer can look finished, thoughtful, and confident.
The safest way to use ChatGPT is to know which failures are normal and which tasks should never depend on it alone.
The main failure modes
| Failure | What it looks like | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Hallucination | Invented fact, quote, source, feature, or event | Verify against primary material |
| Missing context | Good advice for the wrong situation | Supply facts and ask for assumptions |
| Stale information | Old price, law, schedule, or product behavior | Search current sources and check dates |
| Calculation error | Wrong arithmetic or interpretation | Use code, calculator, or spreadsheet |
| Source mismatch | Citation does not support the claim | Open and read the cited passage |
| Prompt injection | A file or webpage tells the model to ignore rules | Treat outside content as untrusted |
| Overconfidence | Uncertainty is hidden by smooth language | Ask what would make the answer wrong |
| Context drift | Long chat contradicts earlier decisions | Restart from an approved summary |
| Bias | Uneven or stereotyped treatment | Review criteria and test varied cases |
| Privacy leak | Sensitive data is uploaded or connected | Minimize data and use approved systems |
These are not rare edge cases. They are ordinary properties of current AI systems.
Do not use it as the only authority
Emergencies and health
ChatGPT can help organize questions or explain general information. It cannot examine a person, call local emergency services reliably, or replace a clinician.
For urgent symptoms, poisoning, self-harm risk, fire, crime, or immediate danger, use emergency services and qualified people.
Legal and financial action
It can explain terms and help prepare questions. It may misunderstand jurisdiction, dates, exceptions, or recent changes.
Do not rely on it alone to file taxes, meet a legal deadline, sign a contract, place a trade, move money, or decide whether you are legally compliant.
Safety-critical work
Do not use generated instructions as the sole guide for electrical, gas, structural, automotive, medical-device, firearm, chemical, or industrial work.
A plausible diagram can be physically impossible.
Exactness is not its natural strength
Language models are probabilistic. They are poor substitutes for systems that must always return the same answer.
| Need | Better tool |
|---|---|
| Arithmetic | Calculator or tested code |
| Record lookup | Database |
| Schedule | Calendar |
| Password storage | Password manager |
| Route guidance | Navigation app |
| Legal text | Official statute, regulation, or attorney |
| Medication directions | Label, pharmacist, or clinician |
| Inventory | Inventory system |
| Version history | Git or document management |
Use ChatGPT to explain or interpret the output, not replace the authoritative system.
It cannot know what it cannot access
ChatGPT may not have your full history, account state, current device screen, private database, or local conditions. Even connected services may expose only part of the information.
Ask it to state what it can see. Do not assume “I checked your email” or “I reviewed the file” unless the interface shows that the relevant source was actually accessed.
Long context has limits
A large context window does not mean perfect recall. The model may miss a sentence, weigh recent instructions more heavily, or combine incompatible versions.
For long work:
- Keep a controlling brief.
- Mark the authoritative source.
- Remove obsolete files.
- Request citations to exact passages.
- Start a new chat when contradictions accumulate.
- Store final decisions outside ChatGPT.
Automation raises the stakes
When ChatGPT can browse, send, edit, schedule, or connect to other systems, an error moves from words to actions.
Use least privilege. Require confirmation before sending messages, deleting data, making purchases, changing records, or sharing files. Review logs and provide a human fallback.
Do not let untrusted webpages or documents decide which tools the model may use.
Emotional and social limits
ChatGPT can sound patient, affirming, and emotionally aware. It does not have feelings, personal loyalty, or full knowledge of your relationships.
It can help you draft a message or reflect on a situation, but it may reinforce a one-sided story. For abuse, crisis, mental health care, or major relationship decisions, involve trusted people and qualified support.
When this is the wrong tool
It is the wrong tool whenever the cost of a plausible error is higher than your ability to detect it before action.
That includes tasks requiring professional licensure, formal authority, exact records, physical inspection, confidential infrastructure, or guaranteed availability.
The honest standard is simple: use ChatGPT where a draft helps and a human check is realistic. Use something else where the first mistake may be the last chance to catch it.
