OpenAI develops the models and operates the services behind ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, Codex, and related products.
Understanding the company matters because its ownership structure, revenue model, partnerships, policies, and infrastructure affect what users can access and how the product changes.
The current structure
OpenAI began as a nonprofit in 2015. After several structural changes, it now consists of the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation and the for-profit OpenAI Group PBC, a public benefit corporation governed by the Foundation.
As of July 2026, OpenAI describes the structure on its About page and Our structure page. Corporate arrangements can change, so confirm current details there.
| Part | Role |
|---|---|
| OpenAI Foundation | Nonprofit governing organization and mission-focused activities |
| OpenAI Group PBC | For-profit public benefit corporation operating the commercial business |
| ChatGPT | Consumer and workplace AI product |
| API platform | Models and tools developers integrate into their own software |
| Business and enterprise products | Managed organizational access, administration, and controls |
| Research and safety work | Model development, evaluation, deployment, and policy |
A public benefit corporation is still a for-profit company. It is designed to consider a stated public benefit alongside shareholder interests, but users should judge results rather than assume the legal form resolves every tension.
How OpenAI makes money
OpenAI's business model includes:
- Individual ChatGPT subscriptions.
- Business and enterprise plans.
- API usage.
- Specialized workplace and developer products.
- Partnerships and commercial agreements.
Advertising, shopping, and other monetization features are now part of the consumer strategy. OpenAI is testing or expanding clearly labeled ads on eligible Free and Go experiences while Plus and higher plans are described as ad-free. Check current disclosures rather than assuming a free service has no commercial incentives.
| Revenue source | What users should watch |
|---|---|
| Subscriptions | Price, limits, feature bundling, and renewal terms |
| API usage | Token and tool costs, rate limits, and model retirement |
| Enterprise contracts | Retention, security, administration, and support |
| Partnerships | Data flow, default placement, and platform dependence |
| Commerce and ads | Recommendation incentives, sponsored placement, and separation from answers |
| Hardware | Support life, privacy, subscriptions, and whether a device offers value beyond a phone |
The high cost of computing creates pressure to improve efficiency, sell premium access, and keep users inside the platform.
Why scale matters
Frontier models require large amounts of computing, electricity, specialized chips, data-center capacity, engineering, and capital.
Scale can deliver stronger models and broad availability. It also concentrates power. A small number of companies decide which models exist, what they cost, where they operate, and what use is allowed.
This is one reason local and open-weight models remain important even when cloud models are more capable.
What OpenAI controls
OpenAI controls:
- Which models appear in ChatGPT.
- Plan limits and feature access.
- Safety policies and enforcement.
- Model retirement and migration.
- Data controls and product defaults.
- Tool permissions and supported integrations.
- Service availability by country and region.
Users control less than they may assume. You can choose settings and plans, but you cannot freeze the service in one state.
Keep important work portable. Export source material, store final artifacts outside ChatGPT, and avoid building a critical process around an undocumented behavior.
Trust, privacy, and contracts
Consumer ChatGPT, organizational workspaces, and the API have different data terms and controls. Do not generalize from one to another.
A company account does not automatically make every use compliant. Organizations still need access controls, data classification, staff training, retention policy, and vendor review.
Read the current privacy policy, consumer privacy information, and enterprise terms relevant to your account.
Competition affects the product
OpenAI competes with Anthropic, Google, xAI, Microsoft, open-model developers, and many smaller companies. Competition can improve models, reduce prices, and create better tools.
It can also encourage rushed releases, confusing model lineups, aggressive bundling, and claims based on selective benchmarks.
Compare products using your own work rather than company launch charts alone.
When this is the wrong tool
ChatGPT is the wrong tool when your organization cannot accept OpenAI's data terms, cloud dependence, policy control, or model-change risk.
A different provider may align better with your existing platform. A local model may be necessary for strict data boundaries. Conventional software may be better when AI adds uncertainty without meaningful value.
OpenAI's mission and structure are relevant context. They are not substitutes for a contract, a security review, or your own judgment.
