Claude is the AI assistant made by Anthropic. This is the short story of how it got here — enough to understand why it behaves the way it does, without the marketing gloss. History rarely helps you finish a task, but it does help you trust (or distrust) a tool for the right reasons.
The short version
Anthropic was founded in 2021 as a public-benefit company focused on AI safety. It shipped the first version of Claude in 2023, grew it through several model generations, and by mid-2026 offers a family of models plus tools like Artifacts, Projects, and Claude Code. The through-line is consistent: build capable models while treating "does this behave safely and honestly" as a first-class problem, not an afterthought.
The people and the reason
Anthropic was started by a group that left OpenAI, including siblings Dario Amodei (CEO) and Daniela Amodei (President). Their stated bet was that AI systems were about to get very powerful very fast, and that safety, interpretability, and predictable behavior deserved a dedicated lab.
Being a public-benefit corporation is not just branding — it means the company's charter formally weighs public benefit alongside profit. Whether that changes outcomes is fair to be skeptical about, but it explains why Claude tends toward caution: it will decline some requests and hedge on others. That is a design choice, not a bug, and sometimes it is genuinely annoying.
Why the training is a little different
Anthropic is known for Constitutional AI — a method where the model is shaped by a written set of principles (a "constitution") plus AI-generated feedback, rather than relying only on humans rating every response. The goal is behavior that is more consistent and easier to reason about. It is not magic: Claude can still be confidently wrong, and a principle on paper does not guarantee the right call in a messy real situation. Treat it as a tendency, not a guarantee.
The name "Claude" is widely read as a nod to Claude Shannon, a founder of information theory. Anthropic has never made a big deal of it, so file that under folklore.
The timeline
The model tiers are named by size of work: Haiku (small, fast), Sonnet (the everyday middle), Opus (the heavy lifter), with newer names added over time. Rough milestones — confirm exact dates at anthropic.com:
| Era | Roughly when | What it added |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic founded | 2021 | Safety-first lab from ex-OpenAI staff |
| Claude 1 | early 2023 | First public Claude; cautious assistant |
| Claude 2 | 2023 | Much larger context (around 100K tokens) |
| Claude 3 (Haiku/Sonnet/Opus) | 2024 | Tiered family; strong vision and reasoning |
| Claude 3.5 Sonnet | 2024 | Artifacts; computer use in beta |
| MCP open-sourced | late 2024 | Open standard to connect your tools and data |
| Claude Code | 2025 | Agentic coding in the terminal and IDEs |
| Opus 4.x / Claude 5 | 2025–2026 | Current flagship plus faster and creative tiers |
What each era actually changed
A few of these mattered more than the version numbers suggest:
- Bigger context turned Claude from a chatbot into something you can hand a whole document or codebase.
- Artifacts gave you a live, side-by-side panel for docs, apps, and code instead of a wall of chat text.
- MCP (the Model Context Protocol) is an open standard, so it is not locked to Claude — other tools use it too.
- Claude Code pushed Claude into doing multi-step work, not just answering.
Where it stands now (mid-2026)
As of July 2026, the flagship is Claude Opus 4.8. The Claude 5 family adds Sonnet 5 and Fable 5, with Haiku 4.5 as the fast, cheap tier. You reach it through claude.ai, the desktop and mobile apps, Claude Code, and the Anthropic API. Plans run from Free up through Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise — check current tiers and limits at claude.ai, since these change often and I won't quote prices that may be stale.
When this history is the wrong thing to read
Honesty check: reading the backstory won't fix your actual problem. Go elsewhere if —
- You need to pick a model today → see flagship or vs.
- You want image generation → Claude still has none of its own; it reads images and builds visuals via code. See images.
- You want hands-free voice → there is no always-on voice mode like some rivals. See voice.
- You need offline or fully private → Claude is cloud-only; see local-vs-cloud.
The useful takeaway from the history is simple: Anthropic optimizes for careful, honest behavior over flash. That is a real strength for writing, analysis, and coding — and a real limitation if you wanted a paint-anything, talk-to-me, lives-on-your-phone assistant.
