Claude is genuinely good at a specific kind of work: reading, writing, reasoning over long documents, and building things in code. But no tool is good at everything, and pretending otherwise just wastes your afternoon. This guide is the honest inventory — the places where Claude is the wrong pick, and what to reach for instead.
The short version
Claude is a cloud-based text-and-code assistant with vision (it can read images you give it) and a large context window. It does not paint pictures, it does not hold a natural spoken conversation, it does not live behind your phone's home button, and it does not know what happened after its training cutoff. If your task leans on any of those, another tool will serve you better.
What Claude simply cannot do
It does not generate images
This is the one people trip over most. Claude can read an image you upload — describe it, pull text out of it, critique a layout — and it can build visuals through code (charts, diagrams, small web pages via Artifacts). But it does not paint a picture from a text prompt the way DALL-E, Midjourney, or Google's Imagen do. Ask Claude for "a photo of a fox in a spacesuit" and you will not get one.
- Want a generated picture, logo, or illustration? Use a dedicated image model.
- Want a chart or diagram from your data? Claude can do that — it writes the code, not a painting.
Voice is nascent
As of July 2026, there is no always-on, natural spoken voice mode in Claude the way ChatGPT has Advanced Voice or Gemini has Live. Voice support is limited and early. If you want to talk to an assistant hands-free — while driving, cooking, or walking — that is not Claude's strength today.
It is cloud-only
Claude runs on Anthropic's servers. There is no offline mode and no version that runs entirely on your own laptop or phone. If you are on a plane with no wifi, working with data that genuinely cannot leave your machine, or you just want zero network dependency, a local open-weight model is the honest answer — even though it will be less capable than Claude.
It has a knowledge cutoff, and can be confidently wrong
Every model has a training cutoff, and Claude is no exception. It does not automatically know today's news, a price that changed last week, or a library released yesterday — unless it uses web search. And when it doesn't know, it can still answer smoothly and be wrong. Treat any specific fact, number, or quote as something to verify, not trust on sight.

Where Claude still shines
To be fair to the other side of the ledger: long-document analysis, careful writing and editing, coding (especially agentic coding through Claude Code), reasoning through a messy problem, and working across a very large context — up to around 1M tokens on some models — are exactly where Claude is strong. If your task is text- and code-shaped and lives in the cloud, you are in the right place.
How to work around the limits
You don't always have to switch tools. A few honest workarounds:
- Need a picture? Have Claude write the prompt for an image model, then paste it there.
- Need current facts? Turn on web search — then still verify the specific number yourself.
- Need a diagram? Ask for an Artifact, and Claude builds it in code, side by side.
- Worried about privacy? Check the current plan and data settings before sending anything sensitive.
