Apple Intelligence can hand certain requests to ChatGPT. This does not turn Siri into the full ChatGPT app, and it does not mean every Apple Intelligence feature uses OpenAI.
The integration is optional. You can use it without signing into ChatGPT, sign in to use your account, or turn the extension off.

Apple's own on-device and private-cloud systems handle many Apple Intelligence tasks. ChatGPT is an external extension used for certain requests.
Use with or without an account
Without a ChatGPT account, requests can still be sent through the Apple integration where supported. They will not appear in your ChatGPT history.
Signing in may provide account benefits, plan access, and history behavior according to the current integration and settings. It also ties activity more directly to your OpenAI account.
Choose deliberately rather than signing in because a setup screen suggests it.

Confirm before sending
The interface may ask before sending a request or attachment to ChatGPT, and settings can affect how often confirmation appears.
Read the prompt. A request may include text, a photo, a document, or screen context. Do not approve automatically when private material is visible.

Siri and ChatGPT have different jobs
Siri is designed to work with Apple devices, apps, contacts, settings, and personal context. ChatGPT is designed for general language and reasoning.
A good mental model is:
- Ask Siri to set a timer, call a person, change a setting, or control a supported device.
- Use ChatGPT for explanation, drafting, brainstorming, and broad questions.
- Do not assume ChatGPT can safely perform a device action just because Siri can.
When a request crosses systems, verify which service is answering and what data is being shared.
Writing Tools
ChatGPT can help compose text from a description. This is useful for a first draft, but it may invent facts, alter your meaning, or produce generic language.
Give it source facts and constraints. Compare the result with the original before sending a work email, medical message, legal statement, or personal apology.
Visual intelligence
You may be able to ask ChatGPT about something shown by the camera or on the screen.
Useful requests include identifying visible text, explaining a control panel, or describing an image. It can misread labels, confuse products, or infer details outside the frame.
For plants, food, medicine, wiring, child safety, or emergencies, treat the answer as a lead—not a diagnosis.
Privacy questions to ask
- Am I signed into ChatGPT?
- What exactly is being sent?
- Is a photo or document attached?
- Will this appear in history?
- Are ChatGPT training controls configured the way I want?
- Does my employer permit this data to leave its managed system?
- Could another person be visible or audible?
Apple and OpenAI have separate policies and controls. Read both when the data matters.
When this is the wrong tool
The Apple integration is the wrong tool when you need the full ChatGPT workspace, Projects, detailed source review, or careful file analysis. Open the ChatGPT app or website instead.
It is also wrong for emergencies, exact identification, confidential documents, or device actions that must not be misunderstood. Use the purpose-built Apple control, official source, or qualified person.
Convenience is the value of the integration. Convenience should not erase the moment when you decide what leaves the device.
