The ChatGPT app is not a separate brain from the website. It is another doorway into the same cloud service, with features shaped around the device in your hand or on your desk.
Mobile is best when the camera, microphone, notifications, or share sheet matter. Desktop and web are better for long documents, many files, careful editing, and work that benefits from a large screen.
Which version should you use?
Install only from OpenAI's official download page or the verified Apple and Google app stores.

Chat history normally follows your account, not the device. If a conversation seems missing, check that you used the same sign-in method and selected the same personal or work workspace.
The offline reality
ChatGPT is fundamentally a cloud product. The app may open or show previously loaded material without a connection, but generating a new response normally requires internet access.
Downloading the app does not download the model. Airplane mode, a dead zone, a restrictive network, or an OpenAI outage can stop the useful part from working.
Keep essential tickets, medical instructions, emergency contacts, and travel details in an offline app you control. A local model can work without the cloud, but it requires separate hardware and setup.

What mobile does unusually well
Ask about what the camera sees
Photograph a device label, error message, menu, plant, or household problem and give ChatGPT a narrow job:
Read the visible model number, list what you can see clearly, and separate that from anything you are guessing.
A photo is incomplete evidence. ChatGPT may misread small text, miss damage outside the frame, or identify the wrong product. For medicine, wiring, food safety, structural issues, or child safety, use the image to organize questions rather than replace an inspection.
Capture thoughts before they disappear
Use dictation or Voice to turn a walking thought, meeting takeaway, or caregiving note into text. End with:
Turn that into a checklist. Mark dates, names, and numbers that need confirmation.
Review the transcript. Proper names, amounts, medication terms, and addresses are common failure points.
Share from another app
Supported devices can send a webpage, image, or selected text into ChatGPT. This is convenient, but it also makes oversharing easy. Check what is attached before sending.
What desktop does better
Desktop is the better choice for uploading several files, comparing drafts, working in Canvas, building a custom GPT, or keeping original sources visible beside the answer.
Some desktop features arrive on one operating system before another. The standalone Atlas browser is being retired in August 2026 as browser-based work moves into ChatGPT and Codex, so use the Atlas migration guide rather than an old installation tutorial. Treat current product pages and in-app menus as the source of truth.

Permissions worth reviewing
The app may request the microphone, camera, photos, screen sharing, notifications, or local files.
- Grant only the access needed for the task.
- Stop screen sharing before opening passwords, messages, health records, or banking apps.
- Review notification previews if sensitive chat titles could appear on a lock screen.
- Follow workplace policy even when the app technically allows an upload.
- Remember that deleting the app does not delete your account or cloud data.
A subscription bought through Apple or Google is managed by that store. One bought on the web is managed through ChatGPT. Check before paying twice.
When this is the wrong tool
The mobile app is the wrong tool when you cannot safely review the result, your connection is unreliable, or the task requires exact comparison across a long source. It is also a poor choice for confidential screen sharing in public.
For a contract, spreadsheet, or research project, move to web or desktop. For guaranteed offline use or data that must never leave your device, use an offline reference, purpose-built app, or local model.
Use mobile to capture and ask. Use desktop to verify and finish.
