Troubleshooting ChatGPT when something is missing or broken
What to do when chats vanish, uploads fail, limits appear, or an app behaves differently.

ChatGPT changes quickly. A missing model or feature may be an outage, a rollout, a plan limit, an administrator setting, a regional restriction, or a product retirement.
Troubleshoot from the outside in. Do not start by reinstalling everything or deleting your data.
First identify the category
| Symptom | Likely category |
|---|---|
| Everyone seems affected | OpenAI outage or degradation |
| One feature is missing | Rollout, plan, region, model, or workspace control |
| One device fails | App, browser, permission, or local network issue |
| One chat fails | Attachment, context, tool, or conversation corruption |
| Responses stop after heavy use | Usage limit or account restriction |
| Login loops | Sign-in method, cookie, clock, network, or identity-provider issue |
| File will not upload | Type, size, storage, parsing, or plan limit |
| Voice cannot hear you | Microphone permission, device input, noise, or network |
Check status.openai.com before changing settings.
Confirm the account and workspace
Many “missing subscription” problems come from signing into a different account or workspace.
Check:
- The email address and sign-in method.
- Personal versus Business, Enterprise, or school workspace.
- Whether the subscription was purchased on web, Apple, or Google.
- Whether an administrator disabled the feature.
- Whether the plan is active and payment succeeded.
Do not buy a second subscription until you know which account holds the first.
Check current product status
OpenAI regularly retires models and merges products. Atlas, for example, is scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026 as browser features move into ChatGPT and Codex.
Read current release notes and the specific feature help page. An old tutorial may describe a button, model, or quota that no longer exists.
As of July 2026 — use the ChatGPT release notes, model release notes, and Help Center as the source of truth.
Use a minimal reproduction
For a chat or file problem:
- Start a new ordinary chat.
- Use a short prompt without custom GPTs or connected apps.
- Try a small known-good file.
- Remove extensions, VPN, or unusual network filtering temporarily if safe.
- Try another official surface such as web or mobile.
- Record the exact error, time, model, and steps.
This helps separate an account problem from one conversation or device.
Browser and app checks
| Check | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Refresh or restart | Clears a stuck interface state |
| Update official app | Fixes known compatibility issues |
| Private browser window | Tests cookie and extension interference |
| Disable one extension at a time | Finds blockers or script conflicts |
| Confirm device date and time | Prevents authentication errors |
| Check microphone and camera permission | Restores Voice or visual input |
| Try another network | Identifies firewall, DNS, or VPN problems |
Do not clear all browser data before saving important drafts and understanding what will be removed.
File and analysis problems
Reduce the file to a small sample. Use clear filenames and standard formats. For spreadsheets, remove merged cells and confirm headers. For PDFs, determine whether the text is searchable or scanned.
Ask ChatGPT to report what it actually loaded. A successful upload icon does not prove that every page or row was parsed correctly.
If a generated download link expires, regenerate or export the artifact promptly and save it elsewhere.
Voice and image problems
For Voice, verify the selected input device, operating-system permission, background noise, Bluetooth routing, and network quality.
For image editing, confirm that the correct source image is attached. If the edit changes unrelated details, revert and request one bounded change at a time.
Contacting support
Prepare:
- Account email without exposing credentials.
- Plan and workspace.
- Device, operating system, browser or app version.
- Exact error message.
- Approximate time and time zone.
- Reproduction steps.
- Screenshot with secrets removed.
- Whether the issue occurs on another device.
Use the official OpenAI Help Center. Do not send passwords, MFA codes, API keys, or full payment details.
When this is the wrong tool
Self-troubleshooting is the wrong path when the issue involves account theft, unexpected charges, data exposure, or a workplace security incident. Secure the account and contact official support or your administrator.
ChatGPT is also the wrong place to diagnose its own outage. Use the status page and external support channels.
