Getting started with ChatGPT: your first useful hour
Your first useful hour: accounts, settings, plan choice, and first prompts.
ChatGPT guide · as of July 10, 2026 · 5 minutes read · details change — confirm current specs on chatgpt.com
ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI workspace. It can explain ideas, revise writing, search the web, analyze files, create images, and help you work through a problem over several turns.
It is not an authority, a person, or a guaranteed source of truth. It generates a likely useful response from your instructions and the context it can access. Sometimes that response is excellent. Sometimes it is polished nonsense.
Your first hour should be about learning a repeatable way to use it, not trying to prove that it knows everything.
Start with the official service
Use chatgpt.com or an app linked from OpenAI's official download page. Avoid look-alike apps and browser extensions that use “ChatGPT” as a generic label.
An account lets chats sync across devices and enables features such as Projects, personalization, and paid plans. Use your own account rather than sharing one with a household or team. Shared accounts mix histories, memories, billing, and private information.
Before doing serious work, review:
- Data Controls: Choose whether new consumer chats may help improve OpenAI's models.
- Memory: Decide whether ChatGPT may remember useful details between conversations.
- Connected services: Do not connect email, storage, or other accounts until you understand the access involved.
- Temporary Chat: Use it when you do not want a conversation in history or memory.
Turning off training does not make ChatGPT local. Your request still goes to OpenAI's servers.
Free or paid?
You do not need a paid plan to learn ChatGPT. Upgrade when a real limit interrupts work you value.
| Plan | Best fit | Honest limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Occasional questions, writing, search, files, and trying tools | Lower limits and reduced access to premium capability |
| Go | Regular users who mainly want more room than Free | Still not the same feature and limit package as Plus |
| Plus | Frequent personal use, deeper work, files, research, and images | Limits still exist and features can change |
| Pro | Heavy individual use of top models and demanding tools | Expensive and unnecessary for most people |
| Business or Enterprise | Managed organizational use and stronger administration | Requires policy, oversight, and additional cost |
As of July 2026, OpenAI lists US monthly prices of $8 for Go, $20 for Plus, and $200 for Pro. Taxes, regional pricing, features, and limits vary. Confirm the current plan at chatgpt.com/pricing.
Do not subscribe because a model name sounds impressive. The default model is usually the best place to begin. For a feature-by-feature buying decision, use the plans and pricing guide.
Your first three prompts
Useful prompts contain context, a task, constraints, a desired format, and a request to flag uncertainty.
| Weak prompt | Better prompt |
|---|---|
Help with dinner | Plan three 30-minute dinners for two adults using chicken, rice, and frozen vegetables. Avoid peanuts. Give one shopping list. |
Fix this email | Rewrite this email to sound calm and direct. Keep every factual claim, remove blame, and stay under 150 words. |
Which laptop is best? | Ask me five questions about budget, software, portability, and battery life, one at a time. Then recommend three laptop types and explain the tradeoffs. |
Try one task from each category:
- Transform: Paste rough notes and ask for a clean version.
- Think: Ask ChatGPT to interview you before recommending an option.
- Explain: Request plain English, an analogy, and questions that test your understanding.
“Act as an expert” is not magic. Relevant facts and constraints matter more than a dramatic role.
Use an answer-checking loop
The strongest habit is refusing to treat the first answer as finished.
- Ask for a first pass.
- Point out what is missing or wrong.
- Ask ChatGPT to list its assumptions.
- For current facts, request web research and sources.
- Check important claims against primary material.
- Save the final result somewhere you control.
For consequential work, ask: What could make this answer wrong, and what should I verify independently?
ChatGPT can sound equally confident when it is correct, mistaken, or filling a gap. Tone is not evidence.
When this is the wrong tool
Do not make ChatGPT your only source for emergencies, diagnoses, legal deadlines, tax filings, financial transactions, or safety-critical instructions. Do not paste passwords, private keys, confidential client material, or anything your employer forbids sending to an outside service.
It is also the wrong tool when you need the same exact result every time. A calculator, database, rules engine, specialist application, or qualified professional may be simpler and safer.
For highly private work, a carefully configured local model may fit better.
A first-hour checklist
- Confirm that you are using the official site or app.
- Review Data Controls, Memory, and connected services.
- Try one rewrite, one explanation, and one decision prompt.
- Ask for assumptions and uncertainty.
- Verify one answer against a primary source.
- Decide whether Free is already enough.
The goal is not to make ChatGPT answer everything. It is to learn which parts of your work become easier when you treat it as an editable first pass.
