ChatGPT Atlas and OpenAI's browser strategy
The Atlas browser’s retirement, migration steps, and where browser-agent features are moving.

ChatGPT Atlas was OpenAI's standalone web browser with ChatGPT built into the browsing experience. It launched for macOS in October 2025.
It is now being retired.
As of July 10, 2026, OpenAI says Atlas is scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026. Browser-based agentic features are moving into ChatGPT and Codex. Confirm the current migration instructions in OpenAI's Atlas deprecation notice.
This guide remains useful because Atlas shows where OpenAI's browser features are going and what users should do before the shutdown.
What Atlas tried to do
| Atlas feature | Intended value | Continuing concern |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT sidebar | Ask about the page without copying text | Page context may contain private or misleading material |
| Browser memory | Find or reuse information from past browsing | More sensitive context and difficult deletion choices |
| Agent mode | Perform multi-step web tasks | Prompt injection and wrong actions |
| Imported passwords and bookmarks | Make switching easier | Browser migration and account-security risk |
| Multiple profiles | Separate work and personal browsing | Separation fails if the wrong profile is used |
OpenAI says lessons from Atlas are being applied to browser experiences inside ChatGPT, including multiple tabs, downloads, improved navigation, and account-login support where available.
What Atlas users should do now
Before August 9, 2026:
- Export or copy important bookmarks.
- Save pages or downloads that exist only in the Atlas profile.
- Confirm that passwords are stored in a password manager you intend to keep using.
- Review browser history and memory settings.
- Sign out of sensitive sites.
- Move active agent workflows to a supported ChatGPT, Codex, or ordinary browser setup.
- Uninstall Atlas after confirming the migration.
Do not assume uninstalling the application deletes cloud chats, saved memories, or OpenAI account data.
Browser-based ChatGPT is broader than Atlas
OpenAI can provide browser help in several ways:
| Surface | What it may offer | Main difference |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | Finds current information and cites pages | Does not require switching browsers |
| Agent or Work cloud browser | Performs supported web tasks in a remote environment | More isolated from your normal browsing profile |
| Desktop built-in browser | Lets ChatGPT browse within the desktop app | Account and download behavior may differ |
| Browser extension | Adds ChatGPT capability to an existing browser | Inherits the security of that browser profile |
| Codex browser tools | Supports technical and repeatable web workflows | Oriented toward coding and automation |
Check the exact surface before signing in. “Browser access” can mean a remote cloud browser, embedded view, extension, or local desktop component.
Keep work and personal sessions separate
A browser knows more about you than a normal chat. It can contain cookies, saved logins, history, autofill, downloads, and active tabs.
Use separate profiles for work and personal accounts. Do not give an agent access to a profile containing banking, health, administrator, or private communication sessions unless the task truly requires it.
A password manager is safer than depending on one browser's built-in store for migration.
Agentic browsing risks
A malicious page can hide instructions intended for the AI rather than the human. The agent may also misread a button, accept a substitution, or continue after a site's layout changes.
Use these rules:
- Research before login when possible.
- Do not expose unrelated tabs.
- Require confirmation before forms are submitted.
- Take over for identity, payment, consent, or security prompts.
- Review download names and origins.
- Verify the final state in the target service.
Browsing convenience should not create standing access to your most sensitive accounts.
What the retirement teaches
Atlas lasted less than a year as a standalone product. That is a useful warning for anyone building a workflow around a new OpenAI surface.
Models, apps, and interfaces can be merged or retired quickly. Keep bookmarks, source files, passwords, and final work in portable systems. Design around capabilities rather than one product name.
When this is the wrong tool
AI-driven browsing is the wrong tool for financial transfers, account recovery, legal submission, medical portals, security administration, or any website where a wrong click can create serious harm.
Use a normal browser and perform the critical step yourself. For deterministic automation, use a tested script or integration with explicit permissions and logs.
