Projects and Canvas solve different problems. A Project organizes ongoing context. Canvas gives you an editing surface for one substantial document or code artifact.
Use them together when a long-running body of work contains files, conversations, and a draft that needs careful revision.

Build a clean Project
A good Project has one durable purpose, such as Kitchen renovation, 2026 job search, or Off Screen Space — ChatGPT guides.
Add:
- A short project brief.
- Audience and output standards.
- Approved terminology.
- Current source files.
- A decision log.
- Separate chats for separate tasks.
Do not put every related thought into one endless thread. Use chats such as Research, Draft, Fact check, and Final QA.
Write controlling project instructions
Project instructions should be short enough to maintain.
Include:
- Purpose and audience.
- Source priority.

- Export or copy the approved version.
For code, run tests outside Canvas. For legal or policy text, use a real redlining and approval system.
Watch model and platform compatibility
Canvas support can vary by model and platform. A newer flagship model may not always support every editing surface at launch.
