Scheduled tasks and reminders in ChatGPT
One-time, recurring, and conditional work—plus the difference between a task and a calendar event.

Scheduled tasks let ChatGPT run a prompt later, repeat it, or check for a meaningful change and notify you. This can cover reminders, recurring summaries, and condition-based monitoring.
It is convenient, but it is not a guaranteed alarm clock, emergency monitor, or unattended business system.
As of July 2026, OpenAI says Scheduled Tasks are available to eligible paid plans on supported mobile and web surfaces. Confirm current access in the Scheduled Tasks guide.
Three kinds of task
| Task type | Example | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| One-time reminder | Remind me tomorrow at 3 PM to call the dentist | Time zone and notification permissions |
| Recurring delivery | Every Monday morning, summarize my planned priorities | Repetition can create stale or noisy output |
| Condition watch | Check monthly whether this product adds UTI detection | The check may miss a change or use weak evidence |
Use an explicit time for anything that must happen at a precise hour. Use a broad daypart only when an approximate time is acceptable.
Write a complete task
A scheduled prompt should explain what one run must do. Include:
- Subject or source.
- Required action.
- Conditions for notifying you.
- Evidence standard.
- Output length.
- What to do when nothing changed.
Example:
Check the manufacturer's official product page and release notes for any announcement that U-Scan can detect urinary tract infections. Notify me only if official documentation says the capability is available or has a confirmed release date. Include the date and source. If nothing changed, do not notify me.
This is better than Keep an eye on U-Scan.
Reminders versus monitoring
A reminder does not need web research. A monitor does.
| Need | Better instruction |
|---|---|
| Remember an appointment | State exact date and time |
| Receive a weekly briefing | Define topics, sources, and length |
| Watch a product feature | Require official evidence and notify only on change |
| Watch a price | Name the exact product, retailer, condition, and threshold |
| Watch weather | Define location, date, and trigger |
| Check email changes | Define what counts as meaningful and what can be accessed |
Condition watches should avoid false alarms. Say whether silence means “nothing changed.”
Manage tasks actively
Use the Scheduled page to review active tasks, next run, status, and notifications. Pause or delete tasks that no longer matter.
Audit:
- Time zone.
- Exact or flexible timing.
- Frequency.
- End date.
- Notification channel.
- Source quality.
- Connected account access.
- Whether the task still matches your intent.
A forgotten recurring task can become noise or continue accessing data longer than intended.
Notifications can fail
A task may run late or not notify because of service issues, account changes, app settings, operating-system permissions, network problems, or plan limits.
For important events, also use a calendar, alarm, medication reminder, or monitoring service designed for the job.
Do not schedule ChatGPT as the sole reminder for flights, court deadlines, medication, child pickup, bill payment, or emergency preparedness.
Privacy and connected data
A task that searches email, calendar, files, or the web may keep accessing those sources on future runs.
Use the narrowest connection possible. Do not ask a task to send messages, make purchases, or alter records without explicit confirmation and review.
For shared workspaces, understand who can create, view, or manage tasks.
Keep monitored topics maintainable
A durable monitor names the source category rather than a single fragile URL. It also defines what counts as a material update.
For law or policy, monitor the official agency and enacted text. For products, monitor the manufacturer and support documentation. For news, require multiple reputable sources when the event is disputed.
Add an end date when the task is temporary.
When this is the wrong tool
Scheduled Tasks are the wrong tool for emergencies, safety alarms, medical adherence, legal deadlines, financial execution, infrastructure monitoring, or anything requiring guaranteed delivery.
Use purpose-built systems with escalation, logs, redundancy, and accountable support.
ChatGPT is useful for low-risk reminders and information checks. Treat the notification as assistance, not a promise.
